   2008 Alumni Dues Now Due

Board of Advisors Epsilon Sigma Chapter
Tau Kappa Epsilon
P.O. Box 4092 Edmond, OK 73083
August 8, 2008

Dear Fraters:

This note is not to alarm you, but to advise you of a concern and to ask you to help your chapter during a difficult
time.

With the help of our alums and a growing chapter, we built and opened the new Epsilon Sigma chapter house
in Sept. 2005. Since, we have had enough men in the house to pay the bills. We’ve even reduced the mortgage
by almost $25,000!

However, due to chapter turnover, young and often inadequate leadership, and a breakdown in rush and rush
emphasis, we open the 2008 school year with only 13 actives and only four or five men living in the house (the
remaining actives have already lived their required time in the house and can’t quickly move back in due to
signed leases and obligations elsewhere).

Just to operate the house, we need around 13 residents, or a bare minimum of about $5,000 per month to pay house
expenses.

Your board of advisors has worked hard to train and motivate the undergraduates, even more since last Spring,
once foresaw the problem we now have. However, we now have our fourth Prytanis since the start of last
school year, and a very young, small chapter that failed to grasp the importance of recruitment.
We, the board of advisors, believe the ship can be righted. However, it’ll take some time. We’re considering all
options to keep the house and the chapter. This may include such drastic actions as recolonizing and keeping
only the cream of the existing group, or renting rooms to non-tekes. We’ve also asked the international headquarters
to help us salvage the chapter.

If these and other emergency actions don’t take, we could lose the house, and the fraters who guaranteed the
loan will be saddled with huge loses none can really afford. Due to market conditions, the house current value
is much less than the mortgage payoff. Thus, selling is not an option, and no other Greek group is in a position
to lease the facility.

Thus, we ask your help to buy us enough time to build and ensure an adequate and well trained quality
membership base to get back to sound financial footing.

We need 100 fraters to step up and kick in $50 per month, possibly through the entire 2008-2009 school year
(September, 2008 thru May, 2009 - up to 9 months). This gives us time to do what we must. We ask this
commitment only for as long as it takes to turn things back around, or to the end of the school year.
This is a notice we never wanted to send you, and a request we believed we’d never have to make. But we
don’t want what we all worked for for 52 years to vanish overnight. We don’t think you want that either. Please
help with any amount you can.

If you have questions, call Board of Advisors Chairman Jon Tankersley at 405/387-3105. A constant update of
our progress and need will soon be posted at www.tekehouse.com
Please let us immediately hear from you so we can best gauge our next emergency step!!

Yours In The Bond

Fraters, the chapter is woefully young, inexperienced and down to 13 actives....

.... Not nearly enough to sustain the new house we built for them in 2005.

SAVE THE HOUSE!!!

Without Your Help, We May Soon Lose Epsilon Sigma’s Chapter House (and our chapter).

Help the Board of Advisors buy time to rebuild an adequate & well trained quality

membership base so that we survive this tough time

If 100 Epsilon Sigma alums or friends step up and kick in $50 apiece

(or whatever amount you can) each month for the next few months

(no longer than Sept. ‘08 thru May ‘09) your board, with the help of

interested alums and the international fraternity, will have time to do

whatever it takes to turn the chapter around and keep the bank from

taking our new house!!!!

Your donations will go directly to house operations. It will not be used

for chapter parties or other undergrad activities We won’t ask you to

continue contributing any longer than May ‘09.

Why Now A Problem? Starting in fall 2007, we returned with a smaller and rather young group that had not

been well trained by their predecessors. They failed to grasp the importance of recruitment or understand

their obligations. This year, even fewer return and they are only now realizing the trouble they are in.

So What Is Being Done To Solve The Problem? Your board is now looking at all options. Under consideration, among other things, is revaluating each individual undergrad, keeping only the cream, and re-colonizing the chapter, and/or renting rooms to non-Tekes. We are also enlisting the help of the international fraternity, recruiting more alums to help train and motivate, and the board is closely monitoring the day-to-day goings on.

Does The Board Believe That Things Can Turn Around Before May ‘09? YES!!! We would not make this plea if we did not think a good fall and spring rush, coupled with intense training of officers, existing members and new members would pull us through.

YES, I’ll Help Save the Epsilon Sigma Chapter House & Chapter!

HOWELL RE-ELECTED

The Epsilon-Sigma Alumni Association met at Homecoming for their annual meeting.  Frater Ed Howell was once again elected to serve as president for the 2007-2008 year.  Frater Scott Perry was elected to serve as Vice-President.    Frater Crain,  has graciously again agreed to serve as Treasurer.

Frater Howell reported on the activities of the Alumni Association for the previous year.  The Association gave scholarships to Jared Smith and Brandon Barnes for academic excellence for the previous two semesters.  Frater Crain reported that the Alumni Association was represented well at the Biennial conclave in Las Vegas this past August.  The Association was represented by Fraters Roger Pugh and David Crane.

Frater Scott Perry agreed to focus his energies on the social aspects of the association.  Upcoming events on the social calendar include Founders Day in January, RCB in April and a 4th of July Celebration this coming Summer.  The dates for 2008 Homecoming will be announce.

Frater Perry will be working on an Alumni v Undergraduate sporting event (TBD) and perhaps a family picnic.  We may also look at resurrecting TEKE Third Thursday (drinks after work).  We will keep you advised.

LOOKING TO THE SECOND HALF OF OUR FIRST CENTURY

Now that the Alumni and Undergraduates built the dream house what is next.  There may be those that think we have crossed the finish line and that our role has been completed.

UCO has grown into a very large University.  The entire campus community is very different from those that attended in the 1950's through the 90's.  In addition the caliber of students and cost of tuition continue to rise.

The Alumni Association is in the process of forming a committee to bring our focus to Scholarships that can be offered to the undergraduates.  Presently the Association offers two modest scholarships.  The Association also helps sponsor delegates to Leadership Conferences and Conclave.

We will be looking at ways to expand and enhance these scholarships for the years to come.  Currently we are paying for these scholarships through your annual dues.   Please feel free to contact the Association with your suggestions.
